At Battery Park City, streetscapes are designed to be pedestrian-friendly. Cars are considered incidental and people essential.
To reflect the area’s emphasis on pedestrians, a 10-foot high, historically inspired post-lantern was chosen as the project’s basic lighting element. It provides appropriate light distribution and color at night, while its daytime appearance adds traditional character to the street through innovative use of modern materials: the luminaire housing reinterprets early New York City park lights in modern, vandal-resistant materials. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the lights also help orient visitors: curb-lined walkways along the waterfront feature aligned post-lanterns that help guide pedestrians to areas featuring active and passive views of the area.
